Coober Pedy is an amazing and unique little town, located 846 kilometres (525 mi) north of Adelaide, or 553 kilometres (343 mi) north of Port Augusta. Coober Pedy is famously known as the ‘Opal Capital of the World’, thanks to its huge haul of precious opals, which have been mined there since 1915. In fact, with over 70 opal fields supplying the world with high quality gems, Coober Pedy is the largest opal-mining region on the planet!

The town’s name is derived from the Indigenous word, kupa-piti, which translates to ‘white man's hole’ and this is no figurative term – the town’s men (as well as women and children) actually do live in holes! Because of the ridiculously hot daytime temperatures of Coober Pedy, the population live in ‘dugouts’, which are underground residences carved out of the rocky ground. Visitors – who usually choose to visit the area during the cooler winter months – have plenty of options for entertainment in Coober Pedy. You can visit a number of museums, including real underground residence that is now a museum, a working opal mine, an underground art gallery, a couple of catacomb churches and a number of quirky but very unique attractions that really draw you into the lives of the locals and their history. You can hear about the local discovery of an opalised pliosaur, or go further afield and visit the beautiful, yet almost extra-terrestrial, surrounding landscapes. Whatever you choose to do, Coober Pedy is one place that’s guaranteed to stick in your memory for a lifetime, for all the right reasons!
