Originating 366 kilometres (227 mi) north of Adelaide and stretching impressively for over 430 kilometres (270 mi) from Port Pirie, all the way to Lake Callabonna, the Flinders Ranges are South Australia’s largest mountain range. With St Mary Peak (1,170 m/ 3,840ft) being the range’s tallest peak and surrounded by the 80 square kilometre natural amphitheatre, Wilpena Pound, there are no shortage of exciting geographical features within the stunning Flinders Ranges National Park. In fact, the ancient Indigenous believed these majestic ranges were formed by the Dreamtime serpents and giants of aeons ago – a story you can learn of if you choose to take a tour with an Indigenous guide

From the northern sections of the Flinders Ranges – which contains the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary and the Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park – all the way through to the southernmost sections – which are noted for the Mount Remarkable National Park and the Pichi Richi scenic railway – the Ranges are full of walking, cycling and horse riding trails that offer either a calm, serene stroll or a challenging ‘off the beaten track’ experience. Whichever option you choose, you’ll be sure to spot some of the plethora of wildlife that lives within this precious wilderness area, such as kangaroos, wallabies, emus, wedge-tailed eagles, parrots and more.

Regardless of your reasons for visiting the Flinders Ranges, you absolutely must perch yourself upon a vantage point to experience the sunrise or sunset views. From a cool, grey veil lifting in the morning to reveal the dawn activities of the wildlife, to the ochre hues and eventual hush of the forested valleys below, there’s no better way to see the stunning Flinders Ranges.
